A Day to Remember - Federal Territory Day

Federal Territory day....what is Federal Territory day? Everybody knows it is a public holiday but other than that what is the significance of that day? People tend to forget that Federal day is not only a public day but a very important day especially to citizens of Malaysia living in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya. Not many know that 2 years from now, we will be celebrating the 40th year of  the Federal Territory day of Kuala Lumpur.

This day has been celebrated by people from different races. Even tourists are welcomed to join in this celebration with different cultures, fireworks, parade and lots of activities. For those who are unfamiliar with the history behind this very special day then this is a brief history to jog your memory..

Selangor surrendered Kuala Lumpur to the federal government and officially declared 1st February 1974 as the Federal Territory day but in actual fact the agreement that was signed by the Sultan of Selangor and Yang di-Pertuan Agong separating Kuala Lumpur from Selangor was on the 28th of January 1974. From that day onwards, Kuala Lumpur became the first federal state on Malaysia. Labuan and Putrajaya joined Kuala Lumpur as a Federal state later on.

This year 2012, events will be ongoing from 28th of January until 29th June 2012 to encourage people to participate during this special day and to instill the spirit of unity among the community. Celebrating Federal Territory day is important, it is not just a public holiday. We all as citizens of Malaysia should really participate in such event. With our support, the concept of 1Malaysia will success.
